This entry is sort of two entries into one as the original Queer Eye for the Straight Guy was probably one of the first notable reality television series that really featured many LGBTQ+ people. However, the reboot made for Netflix might be even more popular and well-known at this point. There’s a moment in the first episode where a woman is rejected with a simple “But, um …” and it feels like you’ve seen someone get stabbed in the heart. It’s shockingly brutal, and only slightly offset by all the other footage of another date that definitely ends in sex. The almost aggressively low stakes are also the show’s one major weakness. Dating Around’s main tension is, essentially, “Which of these five people might get a second date? ” but the premise also means we’ll never see any of these people again, or get to know where any of this went after the fact.

Instead, the show is set up to make viewers feel like we’re just eavesdropping on a date. Unfortunately, Ann hasn’t liked either of Justin’s posts about the show, which seems odd because she’s likely the only person he knows who can share his experience. (Justin shared the trailer twice on his feed and on his Instagram TV.) Still, Ann has liked other posts on Instagram, so perhaps she just didn’t see his ‘grams about the show.

And then there’s a sequence where each of them will pore over the menu, and a sequence where they toast each other. All five dates play out at exactly the same time, in effect.

But the only thing we can do is to keep that exposure high so that people are so used to seeing a black person with a Latina person, with a white person, with a trans person, with an Asian person, so that it’s no big deal. Also, never in the realm of dating, Computer Science Professor Ben went out with five women in a bid to find the love of his life. His personality made him endearing, hence creating one of the most memorable stories of the entire season of Dating Around.

The “marry” for me is also a clear pick, and not coincidentally, this is the biggest saving grace of the admittedly underwhelming episode. I’d pick Victoria for this one, and the fact that Luke also picks Victoria, the strangest person in the bunch, seems like an indication that Luke realizes he needs someone to make him quirkier. All these entries seem “transitional” and eventually leading to something quite significant. Just what the outcome is remains to be seen, but a guess is toward an era of full cultural inclusiveness, regardless of lifestyle preference . Focusing on the now-novelty of preference lifestyles, the “Boy Meets Boy’s” “kicker” includes “incognito straights” mixed in with “outed non-straights” to see where the fun may lead. Demi’s appearance on Dating Around focused on getting a man who wouldn’t break her heart as her previous boyfriends had done.

It was clear to see that Ben was a gentleman as he turned up at the New Orleans restaurant with flowers for all his dates. None of the other situations are quite as dramatic as that, though there are frank confrontations, You’re just not my type grimaces, and nicked egos. Conversely, the participants might get a welcomed kiss or a nice compliment. Some even—stay with me—seem to simply start enjoying themselves in the moment. What propels these people to the meet-up, and viewers to the next episode, feels like the same thing that defines any good Netflix binge, or Tinder swipe-athon, or Candy Crush spiral.

The Dating Around couple did exchange numbers so with any luck, they keep in contact that way. As Dating Around follows New Yorkers on Groundhog Day–like blind dates, viewers may begin to lose their grip on reality. Justin’s five dates are Barbara, Lilly, Ashley, Assata and Ann. Before Dating Around, Justin was in a relationship for six years.
